Shifting power by mainstreaming participatory and decolonial approaches to social impact

Key things to keep in mind when designing a project with and for women and girls.

  1. Know your communities: understand whom you want to work with, and work with them to centre their needs

  2. Question your assumptions: you don’t always know what’s best, so question everything from your project’s length to its activities

  3. Make the most of what you’ve got: resources, connections with the community, your organisation’s history of success, strategies you know work in that area

  4. Plan for sustainable social change: how can what you do reach beyond the timeframe of your project? Make sure it won’t fizzle out when you finish

  5. Learn and go back to the drawing board: approach it with a curious and agile mind – looking to learn and grow, and keeping the project flexible enough that you can easily change it
