Use this checklist with four types of accountability you could (and should) consider in your strategy and project design. It replaces the conventional approaches of looking at ‘horizontal’, ‘upward’, and ‘downward’ accountability. Those approaches are too hierarchical and reinforce traditional power structures. If we want our work to represent the needs of our people, and to promote sustainable social change, that should be reflected in the ways we think about how our projects and our work more broadly is accountable to our teams, donors, communities, and partners. Keep this checklist on hand to think through whether and how you are incorporating these practices.
